Folder tree, list of objects, and preview

After you have clicked Start, the main window changes:

  • Left side - folders found during recovery, organized into a tree.
  • Top right - the content of the selected folder (the list of objects).
  • Bottom right - the preview window to display the selected file content.

Folder Tree

Each filesystem has its own folder tree with the root folder having the same name as the filesystem. If possible, the folder tree is recovered in much the same form as it was before the failure. Thus, you can see FAT, exFAT, NTFS, ReFS, HFS, HFSPlus, APFS, UfsBE and UfsLE, Ext, XFS, or BTRFS.

Note that multiple trees (or even all the trees) containing data recovered from the different filesystems can be shown simultaneously. For example, this is possible if a device had one filesystem and then the device was formatted into another. In this case both filesystem structures coexist on the device. A special RAW root folder almost always presents in the folder tree because it contains recovered data that can't be included into any filesystem.

The folder tree is updated continuously as new information becomes available: new data is added and already existing data is corrected (e.g., a file was found and later its parent folder was determined). The folder tree doesn't get its final form until ReclaiMe will have completely finished the recovery process.

When one of the folders is opened, its subfolders are displayed:

- indicates "normal" folder,
- indicates deleted folder.

List of objects

When you click on a folder from the tree, objects (files and folders) belonging to that folder are displayed in the top right of the main window. For each object the following attributes are listed in the corresponding columns:

  • file (or folder) name and file type (extension) with the appropriate icon,
  • size,
  • last modification date,
  • status - which indicates whether the object is deleted or not.

You can sort objects in the list by clicking on the column titles, for example click the Name header to sort objects by name.

Both the total size of the objects and the object count are shown under the list of objects.

Preview

If you select a file in the list of objects, its content is displayed in the preview window which is located in the bottom right of the main window. In the preview window you can see the selected file either in a way you are familiar with (text, digital photo etc.) or in hexadecimal format. If the file is too large, only part of it will be displayed in the preview window.

By now ReclaiMe has an ability to preview the following file types (note that currently unsupported file types are still available for viewing in hexadecimal format):

Image files:

  • 3FR, ARW, BMP, CR2, CRW, DCR, DNG, ERF, GIF, ICO, JPE, JPG, JPEG, KDC, MEF, MOS, MRW, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, PNG, PPM, PSD, RAF, RAW, RW2, SR2, SRF, TIFF, TIF, TGA, X3F.

Text files:

  • BAT, C, CPP, CS, CSS, DOC, H, INI, INF, LOG, PAS, RTF, TXT, URL, VB, VMDK.

Sometimes, the message "An error has occurred" appears in the preview window. This indicates that either the file is corrupted beyond data recovery, or the appropriate codec is missing. See Previewing RAW image formats (ORF, NEF, CRW, and etc.) for more details.
